Rise of the Shielded Hero

Important note:

This review contains ample spoilers related to anime.

The sub-genre, which we call ek Isekai ve, where the character moves to another world, is out of control. The first traces of this subspecies date back to Alice in Wonderland, published in 1865, and its earliest reflections in Japanese culture go back to the Ouke no Monshou squad published in 1976 and Seisenshi Dunbine in 1983. The Isekai subspecies began to become popular in Japan in the mid-2000s. Many light novels during this period played a major role in the popularization of the Isekai sub-genre. But the major factor in this sub-genre's popularity today is Sword Art Online anime, which was released in 2012 and gained worldwide popularity. Sword Art Online became so popular that many light novels and manga of the following fantasy genres began to use Isekai subtypes, and like all the more widely used species, Isekai eventually lost its old quality and became an insignificant subspecies. Isekai, one of the first sub-genres that came to mind when used to mention quality fantasy squad / light novel / anime, stands out today with its poor quality. Because the majority of Isekai productions that have emerged in recent times are the same. They all contain almost the same elements, and the fences are largely the same. To give an example; he is an overly powerful protagonist, and there are a lot of productions lined up around him, featuring female characters with a waifu potential, and that doesn't end. As such, the Isekai subspecies, which had been praised in the past, became a subspecies approached with prejudice at the moment when the name was heard. While Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari has unique elements and storytelling on the one hand, it is an unstable but good production that includes these cliché elements. Let's start by summarizing the scenario as usual.

Scenario

Naofumi Iwatani; is a young male university student who spends most of his days at a computer but doesn't forget to go out in places when he is bored. When he goes to the library one day, he notices an interesting book and starts to read it. Book; It tells the story of four legendary heroes with swords, bows, spears and shields. Legends say that when the world comes under the influence of a supernatural event called “wave ve, which causes powerful monsters to appear, people will call on these four legendary heroes to prevent the destruction of the waves. When Naofumi reads the book, a light appears on the page of the shielded hero and Naofumi opens his eyes in a place he never knows. Shortly after opening his eyes, he learned that the Kingdom of Melromarc managed to summon four legendary heroes to prevent the waves, and Naofumi was called a shielded hero to this fantastic medieval-themed world. While he is trying to level up with his party, he must come together with the other three heroes when the waves arrive and protect the world from the destruction caused by the waves. However, in this MMORPG-minded world, things will not go as easily as expected, and Naofumi will face events that will lead her to the most difficult times of her life.

When we talk about the scenario, we need to consider the first four chapters separately, because the fourth part is a significant turning point in the story.

Our first episode opens in the form of an ordinary Isekai anime and continues with the same mediocrity until Naofumi was betrayed by Myne. I think this betrayal was a pretty twist. Our author wanted to make a striking entry away from the clichés and succeeded; I think the first part was a very good introduction. The second part was also quite beautiful, and handled the relationship between Raphtalia and Naofumi in a beautiful way. I also liked this part because I loved the concept of taking a slave or an abandoned person and giving him a better life. Even if this is a cliché concept, it is one of my favorite clichés, and when it is well processed, enormous character interactions and storytelling can emerge; so I was expecting an extra three to four chapters focusing on the relationship between the two, but unfortunately it didn't. With the third episode, there was a one-week time-lapse, and suddenly we saw Raphtalia as advanced and extremely attached to Naofumi. That was the biggest mistake for me in the script. The third and fourth chapters, although good, contained enormous spent potential. Instead of a one-week time lapse after the second episode, if they spent this one-week process slowly and filling up for three to four episodes, they would have spent improving the relationship between Raphtalia and Naofumi, and if they had taken the relatively emotional scene at the end of the fourth episode, probably from the seventh then Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari was declared by almost everyone the best fantastic medieval anime ever; but this did not happen. Unfortunately, our author has thrown a huge potential in his hands just to advance the story quickly.

Although the first four chapters spent quite a lot of potential, the chapters up to thirteenth, that is to say where Naofumi was accused of kidnapping Melty, were exactly as they should have been, except for a few places. The adventures of Raphtalia, Naofumi and the newly added Fleet were in line with the animate's “MMORPG world” concept. It was a pleasure to watch the events that happened to them while they were taking them from somewhere. They made you feel that the story really took place in a world that works in the minds of MMORGP, and while doing so, they did not neglect to mention that it was not a game world at all, but a real world. The battle with Glass in the twelfth episode was equally wonderful.

These excluding except for a few places were the main character's defeat of his opponent despite the constant cheating against our main character. Although this concept is beautiful when it is used for the first time or two, it starts to squeeze because of the fact that it takes its water out. The race for the village of Lute was particularly boring, except that they showed how strong a member of the Party was. We already know that the main character will win. let's say that you'll necessarily extend at least one of the previously used, despite the tricks of the main character to use the concept instead of winning another concept is not boring. Apart from this small detail, as I said before, 5-12. the chapters were exactly as they should be.

The parts where Naofumi was accused of kidnapping Melty were good at first, but I think it was processed too fast, just like in the Raphtalia-Naofumi relationship. While these sections lasted for 5-6 episodes, I was amazed at what I had been through when two episodes were passed directly to Raphtalia's flashbacks and then to the Filolial queen; I was expecting the sections where Naofumi and her party proceeded with some more secret hanging.

In these parts, there was also a feature of Naofumi that I didn't like, but I will talk about it when I talk about Naofumi because Naofumi was a protagonist that I liked very much.

I do not want to mention the pope war that took place in the aftermath of these events, because it was very poor quality. It was a kind of war that was used to connect the dots in the story. I plan to touch on the twenty-first chapter towards the end of the review, and I will not touch on after that, because those parts had nothing but a basis for the continuation of the story.

CHARACTERS

The character cast of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is unaffected by the imbalance that prevails throughout the anime; anime, neither very abundant nor very scarce character staff.

Before mentioning the main characters, let us briefly talk about some of the characters. I liked the side characters of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, though not much. Almost all of them met enough of what I expected from a side character. Myne, in particular, was a side character who, even though he was a cliché character, did his job well until the twenty-first episode.

Iwatani Naofumi

Thanks to the scandalous Isekai protagonists recently, I was longing for a realistic Isekai protagonist, and so I loved him, even if Naofumi wasn't such a perfect character. When I watched Naofumi, I kept saying, “That's how a proper Isekai protagonist should be. Hariç Even in my eyes, the other three heroes that were summoned represented the scattered Isekai protagonists, while Naofumi represented a proper Isekai protagonist. A protagonist who doesn't play heroic but is aware of the fact that this is a real world, is a sharp-minded, aware of what he is doing and does not pursue girls. The only thing I didn't like was that Raphtalia used the stereotype of “Falling down her level. Ede in the scene where she faced the person who suffered the most for her past. No, the man in front of him caused Raphtalia the greatest pain of his life, killed his closest friends, burned down his village; "Sometimes you have to give bad people the punishment they deserve, at the expense of lowering your level."

Apart from this small detail, Naofumi was quite a character I liked. Of course, if I hadn't spent the potential parts I was talking about in the script, it would have been a much better rendered character, but that's a separate issue.

Raphtalia

Raphtalia might have been a perfectly written deuteragonist, but it was formally transformed into a flat waifu material. The flashbacks in the middle of the anima are pretty nice, I don't have a word for them, but instead of skipping time at the beginning, it would have been nice if they could handle the Raphtalia-Naofumi relationship better and connect us to the characters more and not make a waifu material. Already waifu even as a material life was not too long, even before the end of the anime had lost its popularity on the Internet. When we put aside the Waifu part, Raphtalia had no other function than to say, “I am your sword, Naofumi-sama. Tada Of course it works in battles, but it is no different from a cardboard model other than war.

Filo

The fleet is a great character when it comes to pets. Sweet, loyal and strong; it has all the features a pet in a story like this should have. I've seen people who call this character "waifubait" because of the fact that it turns into a blonde lolie, I'm very abstained about it. I think the Fleet doesn't have enough scenes to be called "waifubait", but I don't think it's necessary to turn it into a blonde lolie. It wouldn't have had much effect on the anime, even if it had only been in bird form throughout the entire series, it would have been even better for me. Because the Fleet in bird form was my favorite character in this anime.

Visuals

Drawing quality is one of the few issues where Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is not unstable. As expected from Kinema Citrus, the quality of the drawings is quite good in all sections, except for a few specific locations. They generally used green tones in the color palette, and I liked it because I like green. Other than that, I don't have much in mind about drawing quality.

Anime's animations are another unstable part. In some scenes the animation is very good, in some scenes it is very bad. To explain with an example; the animations in most fights were pretty good, while most of the scenes the Fleet ran as a bird were bad animations. Although there was a significant decrease in the quality of the drawing during animations in some fights, but at least the drawings in these scenes did not pose a problem for me as they did not go down to the Paint level as in the Bones animations.

Finally, the point I want to mention is CGI. You know, there are some points, they are open to interpretation and are discussed, so the CGI in this anime is not one of them. I think Kinema Citrus devoted all the money to the sequel to Made in Abyss, because the CGI used in the anime is extremely bad. When I was watching a pretty Kinema Citrus anime, I suddenly came across so bad CGI scenes that in some places I was officially eager. Especially in that dinosaur part. Anyway, I hope they get as much income as they want from Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, but we don't see such bad CGI scenes in the continuation of Made in Abyss.

Sound

Neither of the two songs in the anime's opening clips were the kind of songs that appealed to me, so I didn't like them, but the two opening clips were visually great; and that's all, since I've watched two opening clips only once, I can't give a more detailed view of them.

Unlike the opening clips, I loved both closing clips. Both of them had already succeeded in satisfying me in the song section, but they were very good visuals for a visual closing clip. Of course, if there were no "spent potential" parts in the first chapters I mentioned in the script, and the Raphtalia-Naofumi relationship had been better processed, the effect of the first closing clip would have been much greater.

All the soundtracks in the animation are composed by Kevin Penkin and almost all of them are great. All of the soundtracks are very successful in reflecting the music and atmosphere of a MMORPG set in the fantastic middle ages. I especially loved the "GLASS" soundtrack, and the fights with Glass really made it feel like a game fight, as it resembles music from old JRPG games.

The soundtracks are great, but the anime's sound director has officially slaughtered Kevin Penkin's wonderful work. In most places, the sound of the effects on the stage is so badly used that it makes the soundtrack almost inaudible. This wasn't limited to this, but in some places the sound of the soundtracks suppressed character sounds, and many of the major scenes lost their effectiveness to a great extent. I wish they had worked with the voice director Yamada Haru and Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari at Made in Abyss, it was sad to witness that Kevin Penkin's enormous work was officially massacred in some scenes.

As far as voiceovers are concerned, there is no particular point, as most of the voice actors in the anime are recognized and good at their work, most of them are good.

PROCEDURE

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is an action, drama, fantasy, adventure anime.

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is an unstable anime about drama. In the first episodes, the drama over Raphtalia was a huge spent potential, while in the middle of the anime the drama over Raphtalia was quite good. Likewise, the drama over Naofumi was good to a certain extent, even if it wasn't such a thing. I know I've been too close to this, but I'm really sorry that the potential in these early chapters has been wasted. The author just missed the chance of perfect drama and character processing to advance the story faster ...

I like the adventure, especially 5-12. the adventure of the chapters was exactly as it should be. Naofumi was involved in a game and traded as a trader. The Melty portions were good, albeit a bit rushed. As it was the first step of a big story this season, it was an introduction to Naofumi's real adventure. Considering it was an entry season, I think the adventure genre was pretty good.

This season is an introductory season, and because of the rise of Naofumi's fantasy genre could not be processed deep. Most of the fantasy elements in the anime were the basic elements in the style you can find in many other fantasy animes. The only fantastic element that attracted my attention was the Queen of the Filolial, but since they didn't mention it much, there's not much I can talk about about fantasy processing in the anime.

I liked and disliked the action of the action. The small action scenes were satisfying enough, but most adults were not satisfactory. The war with the pope, especially around the twentieth episode, was a complete disaster, except for Naofumi's ability to demonstrate the Blood Fed. As a matter of fact, I didn't like the season finals, but even though the heads of that fight were good, he experienced a rapid decline in quality after entering Glass. But I totally loved the Glass fight at the beginning of the twelfth episode. He's fighting; the movements of the other three heroes, the soundtrack playing back, the sound effects and the attack animations, made it feel like it had sprung from an old JRPG game in every sense.

Another detail that bothered me about the action was the way Naofumi used her shield. Throughout the anime, the man used almost the same kind of shields and made the same combos. You know, if they don't show us that shield interface, we'll say that the shield types you have at the moment are limited to that, but the guy opened a lot of different types of shields and we saw them directly in the anime.

I realize that I have never touched the anger shield during the review, because I don't think there is something that can be touched on this moment. Yes, it's nice material, but what we know about the anger shield is very limited. We'll probably learn more about him later, and it's going to take a big place in the story, but for now I don't think it's worth mentioning in detail.

Finally, what I want to mention is Myne's fate. You show us the scum Myne has done since the beginning of the anime and make sure that we don't hate him, we endure these scum for twenty episodes, and now we're at a point of fury; So what are you doing, just a derogatory nickname to the woman and let go. What, is that really it? Okay, maybe a dry execution wasn't enough for Myne, but there's no doubt that it would be a better one than it is now. Let's say Naofumi realized that the queen was going to put his own life on her and prevented Myne from being executed. So what's the punishment? Seriously, is that your insult, is it just a nickname? While there are many types of humiliation, from shame march to a lot of other punishments, do they consider it appropriate to call someone who has committed major crimes in an extremely important event affecting the country's fate? Look, I've passed him, how can this Myne still hang out at Motoyasu's party? How could a traitor who tried to kill his sister, the heir to the throne, still be able to live in Motoyasu's party? This woman had to be stripped of all her assets and expelled from the country. I told you we're making a Disney movie, I'm taking that back. Even in Disney movies, there are scenes that are even smoother than this.

PLUSES:

+ 5-12. sections are very good

+ Great music

+ Good overall drawing quality

The first fight with + Glass is tremendous

Cons:

- Raphtalia-Naofumi relationship is one of the biggest expended potentials I've seen

- The sound director has officially murdered the animate at some point.

- Myne's fate is one of the worst written things I've ever seen.

I liked Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari in general, even though it had a lot of spent potentials and a lot of cons. I think it was neither as good as some exaggerated, nor as bad as some buried. I think there is an Isekai anime above average, and as someone who loves the fantasy genre, I had fun watching this animate, even though I cut my hair in some places. This anime was clearly an anime that Kinema Citrus released, thinking that the Isekai sub-genre could make a good amount of money thanks to its popularity. I hope they make the continuation of Made in Abyss in a higher quality than usual with the money they earn from this anime, and make us watch an enormous anime from the first season.
